Extended Play Hours at Presidio Wall (beginning May 15, 2023)

We are pleased to announce that Presidio Wall courts will have expanded hours for Pickleball play beginning Monday, May 15.

Pickleball courts A-F (aka Tennis Courts 1 & 2) will be dedicated to Pickleball play ALL DAY (except when reserved from 3-6PM for scholastic tennis play during the SF High School athletic season).  “Open play” hours will continue to use the Paddle queue system.

  • The “south 3” courts (B/D/F) are available for drop-in open play from dawn until dusk every day.  All open play will continue to use the paddle queue system.
  • The “north 3” courts (A/C/E) are open-play between 9am and 1pm on weekdays, and between 9am and 3pm on weekends. They are reservable before 9am every day, and in the afternoons until dusk, starting at 1pm on weekdays and 3pm on weekends.

Tennis courts 3 & 4 (dual-lined as 6 PB courts now named G thru L) will offer dedicated Pickleball play from 9 AM – 3 PM on Saturdays using the Spotery reservation system.  The rest of Saturday’s hours, plus all-day Sunday, are available for tennis court bookings on Spotery.  These courts are also “open play” if not reserved.  The six Pickleball courts on 3 & 4 will also host the Intro to Pickleball teaching session held every Tuesday morning from 10-12 noon.

Bottom line: Courts A-F availability for dedicated Pickleball play increases from 3 to 14 hours/day on Mon-Fri, and the change from 1.5 to 6 hours/day of dedicated Saturday play on courts G-L means the total court hours goes up over 50% across both pods of courts on weekends.

While the new schedule does not give PB all the hours we wished for, the new schedule substantially increases the number of hours each week for dedicated Pickleball play in both tennis court pods.  It blends drop-in play with court reservations and should improve opportunities for players to get onto a court with less waiting between matches, or to reserve a court for an hour.  We will evaluate the changes and continue to work with RPD to fine-tune and perhaps alter the schedule over the summer.  The new schedule benefits the Pickleball Community while still allowing access to Tennis play by High Schools and local tennis players.  We believe the outcome of the schedule changes will be a net positive for the PB Community and should help RPD realize that the sport of PB is here to stay, and will require future investment citywide in more court resources.

This is an interim schedule btw, per Rec & Park, until they are able to open brand-new courts at Larsen Playground on the corner of 19th and Vicente (site of the jet plane) on the west side of the City.  There will be 8 permanent courts at Larsen, which is estimated to be ready this Fall, 2023.

Keep on dinking !!

Temporary Expanded Pickleball Hours at Presidio Wall

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (RPD) strives to support and balance the diversity of recreational activities within our park system. Pickleball continues to grow in popularity and RPD is working to create more pickleball options. We are in the process of creating a new pickleball facility at Larsen Playground (expected Fall 2023) which will provide more pickleball courts on the west side of the city.

In the interim, we are providing a temporary expansion of pickleball hours at Presidio Wall Park to address the high use and large groups looking to play. After discussion with the pickleball community, we are proposing to expand pickleball play hours at Presidio Wall, effective May 15, 2023,  After Larsen Playground pickleball facility opens, we will reevaluate usage throughout the city and adjust schedule as needed.
